Printmaking Petroglyphs

Introduction:
Each of you is going to create your own self-identity petroglyph using printmaking techniques in class this coming week. Before we can do that we need to get some inspiration!!!

Tasks:
1. Look at the following sites to familiarize yourself with petroglyphs. What are some common things you find in different petroglyph symbols? Translate some of the symbols into modern terms. For example, the canoe/boats are symbols of travel and transportation; how can we make that into something people today would understand (buses, cars, taxis, ferries, airplanes, etc.) Think of how you could find yourself within some of these modern symbols you come up with.
Hawaiian Petroglyphs
Wikipedia Petroglyph Site (Look at all the different cultures listed!)
Native American Petroglyphs (Be sure to scroll through the pages to see lots of examples)

2. See what other sites you can find with information about petroglyphs. Write down the websites so we can look at the images together in class. Also, find out some background information on ONE culture's use of petroglyphs. Why did they do it? How did they do it? What did the symbols mean?

3. Review the techniques of printmaking
Which one of these types of printmaking most reflects how early petroglyphs made their symbols?

4. Make some sketches in your sketchbook of good ideas you find throughout your research into petroglyphs. Also, make a preliminary sketch of a symbol/petroglyph that truthfully portrays you. Think about what makes you who you are (religion, sports, family, hobbies, etc.)

Conclusion:
Bring your research, ideas, and sketches to class so we can discuss them and start working on our prints!
